Hotel Charlevoix demolition to begin this month

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A crumbling downtown Detroit eyesore will be coming down this month.

Demolition on the Hotel Charlevoix will likely begin on May 28th, according to Nathan Ford, who is the director of Detroit's Buildings, Safety, Engineering and Environmental Department. Required abatement work will start about two weeks before that, Ford added.

A permit to tear down the 108-year old building was issued late last month, Ford said. A judge order the demolition in January .

The Charlevoix is owned by Ralph Sachs, who city officials have called one of the city's worst blight offenders.

In fact, last year 7 Action News named the Hotel Charlevoix as one of Downtown Detroit's 7 most dangerous buildings .

The demolition of the Hotel Charlevoix will be done at Sachs' expense.
