Accidents blamed on icy roadways

(WXYZ) - Icy roadways are being reported in Wayne and Washtenaw Counties.

Dearborn Police say the weather played a factor in a couple of crashes that closed the Southfield Freeway on Monday night. Both the southbound and northbound lanes have since been reopened.

Local police agencies say there have been 20 weather-related accidents reported around the area tonight.

The 7 Action News team tested out some of the roadways in Dearborn and didn't make it above 30 miles an hour on untreated areas of the highway like along Southfield Road.

In Allen Park, there were also several spin-outs that we saw.

Wayne County issued a partial call-in just before 8 p.m., putting about 70 salt trucks into action. We're told it's an early start to the salting season.

"We got hit by surprise with the snowstorm. We thought it was dissipating, but it gained some power and moved through Wayne County," said Cindy Dingell with the Wayne County Department of Public Services.
