(WXYZ) - The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office says a mother and son were killed in a highway crash in Burtchville Township, Michigan on Thursday afternoon.
We're told the family was from Wixom and they were on their way to Lakeport State Park to go camping when the accident happened.
The sheriff says the 15-year-old son was driving on his learner's permit when he turned their SUV in front of a semi-truck. The 53-year-old mother and 15-year-old son were killed in the crash.
The teen's 21-year-old sister was riding in the back seat and authorities say she sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The sheriff says the teen was getting in his driving hours so that he could receive his license.
The driver of the semi-truck, a 72-year-old man from Almont, was checked at the scene and refused treatment.
The crash remains under investigation, but neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be a factor in the accident.
