DETROIT (WXYZ) - Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano will be without his two drivers--who double as security guards-- following backlash over the pricey perk.
The CEO's office decided not to ask the Wayne County Commission to renew the contracts of Ficano's two drivers, who cost taxpayers more than $140,000 a year. Instead, the contracts will end this week.
"The contracts for the CEO's security officers expired and we are making arrangements to make sure that CEO security is covered," said June West, a Ficano spokeswoman.
Ficano, already under fire as the FBI digs for corruption inside his administration, got an earful from commissioners and taxpayers alike when news of the perk broke. That outrage grew even more when Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Ficano's budget cuts forced her to lay off 26 on her staff.
It's unclear who, if anyone, will chauffeur Ficano in the future.
