(WXYZ) - Bernard Kilpatrick is officially behind bars to start his federal prison sentence.
The former mayor's father has been out on bond so he voluntarily reported to a federal prison in Texas on Tuesday. Bernard Kilpatrick will serve his sentence in a minimum security correctional facility about 35 miles from where his grandsons and daughter-in-law, Carlita Kilpatrick, were last known to be living.
Judge Nancy Edmunds sentenced the 72 year old to 15 months in prison for his tax charge conviction in the Kilpatrick Corruption Case.
His son, Kwame Kilpatrick, is still being held in Milan, Michigan. But Detroit's former mayor will likely be transferred to a Texas federal lock-up to serve his 28 year sentence for his racketeering, bribery and other convictions.
Kilpatrick's wife and children have been living in the Dallas area for the last five years, and Bernard Kilpatrick had been helping to care for his grandsons ever since the former mayor was locked up in March. With Bernard Kilpatrick's placement at FCI Seagoville, he will only be a short drive away from family during his 15 month prison term.
Kwame Kilpatrick and Bobby Ferguson are both still in Michigan. Bureau of Prisons officials will not say when the former mayor will be assigned a permanent prison location. Ferguson is still expected to make several federal court appearances in Detroit for restitution hearings stemming from the RICO conviction, as well as his upcoming separate bid-rigging re-trial.
