Bobby Ferguson due back in court Thursday for hearing on appointing a lawyer

(WXYZ) - A judge has ordered convicted city contractor Bobby Ferguson to appear in federal court tomorrow for a hearing on appointing a lawyer.

Ferguson was convicted on racketeering and bribery charges with his long-time friend, former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick back in March.  But Ferguson still needs a lawyer for his upcoming bid-rigging re-trial.

His original lawyer had to withdraw from the case due to illness, and Ferguson has been advised not to fill out a financial affidavit that's usually needed for a court-appointed lawyer.  The judge has reviewed other cases where the court can assign a lawyer to the case without the usual affidavit being signed.

If an attorney is appointed, and if more of Ferguson's assets are uncovered, Ferguson will re-pay the cost of his defense. The bid-rigging case has been postponed indefinitely.
