Caught on video: Warren teenager whipped by relatives

Police to seek charges Tuesday

Warren, MI - Caught on camera:  two people whipping a young teenager.

It happened in Warren, but people across the country have been watching the video on Facebook and reaching out to police here.

Freeze frames – that’s all we can show of you this video posted on Facebook. It shows the beating of a 14-year-old boy, and it shocked Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green

“Two people, two belts, and continued on for over a minute,” said Green.  “As he was screaming for them to stop, and then even when they left him, go to bed, then they called him some names.”

Detectives say it happened in a house on Hudson Ave back in January or February, but the video was just recently shared online.

“The original report we got on this video we got Saturday.  And the report came from a person who viewed on Facebook in Idaho,” said Green.

In the video, you can see a 19-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy push the other boy into a bedroom.

Detectives say the 19- and 15-year-old are the boy’s cousins who took it upon themselves to whip him for stealing items from a school last fall.

“At what point does discipline cross the line and become a criminal act.  I viewed the video, and it looked like quite a beat down to me,” said Green.

You can hear the woman calling the 14-year-old a thief.  The 15-year-old uses racial slurs as he whips the boy.  The beating is relentless for a minute and a half.

Commissioner Green says the 14-year-old was not severely injured.  His detectives will be seeking criminal charges from the prosecutor on Tuesday.

As soon as the school learned about it, they called police and child protective services immediately.
