DETROIT (WXYZ) - A former top aide to Wayne County CEO Robert Ficano will serve 7.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to an elaborate kickback scheme that robbed a county insurance program meant for the needy.
Prosecutors say former assistant county CEO Michael Grundy siphoned hundreds of thousands of dollars from Wayne County Health Choice to buy a timeshare in the Caribbean, a home in Detroit , fancy cars and even hair plugs, costing $10,000.
The news of Grundy’s sentence comes almost a month before voters will go to the polls and decide if his former boss, Ficano deserves to be the Democratic nominee for Wayne County CEO.
Ficano has been campaigning aggressively, even though the FBI's years-long probe into corruption inside his office is still ongoing.
So far, polls have shown Ficano in last place.
