BIRMINGHAM (WXYZ) - Thanksgiving at the Hathaway home must have been interesting this year. State Supreme Court Justice is under an FBI investigation, already having been been hit with a civil complaint accusing her of fraud. Now her daughter, Judge-Elect Dana Hathaway has a controversy of her own.
The City of Birmingham recently learned that Hathaway has been getting a tax break on her home on Catalpa Street. She claimed it as her primary residence for the last three years, giving her a break on her taxes.
But this is only one of Hathaway's primary residences. She claims another home in Grosse Pointe Woods. That's saved her lots of money, but it's also illegal.
In Michigan, a property owner can only claim one primary residence. Just last month, Hathaway had to pay the City of Birmingham $1,100 it was owed, plus another $5,500 to Oakland County.
She spoke to 7 Action News late today and was very apologetic. She said this entire scenario was a mistake, and hopes to put it behind her.
