DETROIT (WXYZ) - The US Attorney's Office released 49 exhibits used to convict former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his father Bernard Kilpatrick in a five-month trial that ended yesterday.
Some of the evidence includes copies of checks written from Kilpatrick's Civic Fund that was supposed to help children and educate voters.
One check is for more than $3,000 made out to Tom Deaton's Driving Range. Another check for $1,500 was written to The Yoga Center. At trial, the defense put an expert in nonprofits on the stand, hoping to show that Kilpatrick used the Civic Fund properly. But when shown the check for yoga paid out of the Civic Fund, he laughed out loud.
Another check from the Civic Fund was written to the Sonnenalp Resort for over $1,000. And another $8,000 check was written to the LaCosta Resort and Spa in California for a Kilpatrick family vacation that was first exposed by the 7 Action News Investigators.
Also part of the evidence released today is undercover video of Bernard Kilpatrick meeting with James Rosendall outside Bernard's condominium. Rosendall is the former Synagro Technologies Vice President who testified in the Kilpatrick Corruption trial that he paid off Bernard Kilpatrick to keep him from killing the $1.1 Billion sludge hauling contract.
