(WXYZ) DETROIT - Strategic Business Partners is a company that worked closely with Wayne County's now charged former I-T director Tahir Kazmi. He was charged last month for shaking down at least one county contractor and later trying to cover it up.
After SBP was named in an FBI subpoena late last year, its $9 million contract with Wayne County was canceled and put out for bid again. But only SBP submitted a bid.
Now, the company is on its way to receive $1.4 million that the county was withholding while the FBI probe was underway.
Some of the IT work that Strategic Business Partners has done for the county involves creating an electronic health records system for inmates in the Wayne County Jail.
The Jail medical division is part of the county's Health and Human Services Department – which is the same agency where former assistant Wayne County Executive Michael Grundy worked until he was fired last November. He was indicted earlier this year, also for shaking down a county contractor.
S-b-p hasn't been paid anything yet. The contract isn't a done deal until the full commission votes on it next week, but Wayne County Commission Chairman Gary Woronchak told me he expects it will be approved.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Diane Webb says that she's not surprised SBP was the only company bidding for the work. She says the software they've created for the county couldn't be duplicated by another vendor. they were the only ones who could finish the job.
