Dr. Scott R. Schell was appointed director of the Comprehensive Breast Care Program at Beaumont Hospitals on September 1st, 2006.
Dr. Schell earned a doctorate in biological sciences from the University of Chicago, and a medical degree from the university's Pritzker School of Medicine in 1991. He completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Johns Hopkins University in 1997, and followed his residency with a surgical oncology fellowship and faculty appointment there. He is board certified in surgery.
During his training at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Schell was also a postdoctoral fellow studying gene therapy with the National Institutes of Health Surgical Oncology Research training program. He was also registrar of surgery at John Radcliffe Hospital, which is affiliated with Oxford University in England.
Dr. Schell is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Society of University Surgeons, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the Society of Surgical Oncologists, among professional associations. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Surgical Research and associate editor of the Journal of Laparoendoscopic and Advanced Surgical Techniques.
Dr. Schell has authored numerous research abstracts, journal articles, book chapters and electronic media. He is recognized as a successful researcher who has earned grant support from local, national, federal and charitable funding sources. His current research focus includes the investigation of new methods to improve success following cancer treatment and utilization of new genetic testing to prevent breast cancers from occurring in susceptible patients.
