DETROIT (WXYZ) - Police remain at the scene of a horrific accident on Detroit's southwest side. A 12-year-old boy is dead, a pregnant woman and six others suffered serious injuries, and investigators say it's all blamed on a drunk driver.
The cars are hardly recognizable; the wreck was so bad a 12-year-old boy in the back seat of one of the vehicles did not survive. And police are saying it was all caused by 20-year-old man who was driving drunk.
Marlene Montes was walking near the intersection of Fort and Dearborn Streets around the time the accident happened. Besides seeing the victim, she also saw the driver who allegedly caused the crash. Police say he was clearly intoxicated and belligerent.
"The driver was totally out of control," Montes said.
Investigators say the 20-year-old driver plowed into two cars that were waiting at a stop light. Inside the first car was the 12-year-old victim, his 11-year-old brother and their mother. Inside the other car, a woman who is 15 weeks pregnant, and two other adults.
The 12-year-old boy died at the hospital. The rest of the injured are listed in serious condition.
