Are You Getting The Most From Your Vitamins?

Last Update: 11/06/2009 1:05 pm
(WXYZ) - Most of us try to eat right, and many people take vitamins everyday. But how do we know if our body is making the best use of those vitamins? Now there’s a test that will tell us.

Nutritious fruits and veggies are part of Ken Enborg’s regular diet. He also takes vitamins every day to make sure he’s staying as healthy as possible.

He told us, “I’m looking to improve my health, I’ve gone through several life changing events over the last few years and its caused me to focus on the quality of life that I have in addition to just perhaps longevity.”

So he’s working with Dr. Katherine Nori at the Beaumont Health Center and he’s signed up for micronutrient testing.

According to Dr. Nori, “Micronutrient testing is really a way of assessing a patient individually by looking at 32 different vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants in your blood.”

Typical blood tests are like a snap shot that shows how much of certain vitamins are present in a patient’s blood at one particular point in time.

But for this test, the blood is sent to a lab in Houston and divided into 32 different samples to be tested for each of the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Dr. Nori explained, “Micronutrient testing actually takes your white blood cell and watches those cells over a week’s time with each of those 32 vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and watches how the vitamins move in and out of the cells.

The results come back in a couple of weeks and show whether the patient’s body is effectively using the nutrients,

Dr. Nori: “So we can functionally see where a patient has deficiencies and then we can recommend foods and nutrients, minerals and antioxidants that can treat that patient uniquely and individually for their needs.”

Things that can affect a person’s effective use of micronutrients include heredity, age, interactions with prescription medications or over the counter drugs,

many people do try to eat healthy but it might not be all that you need, and this test will really define what you need as far as all your micronutrients.

Ken still doesn’t know what its going to say. But he told us, “I’m very excited to hear the results.”

Anyone can sign up for this testing, but it includes counseling sessions beforehand and afterward. We’re told in most cases, insurance will pick up the tab.
