DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Symphony Orchestra conductor and music director Leonard Slatkin is recovering after suffering a heart attack in the Netherlands.
Slatkin was conducting the Rotterdam Philharmonic Sunday when he began feeling chest pains. The 65-year-old finished the performance before heading to the hospital for treatment.
Doctors treated Slatkin by inserting two stents to keep his blood vessels open. The procedure is common, and Slatkin is expected to be okay.
The DSO says Slatkin will remain in the hospital for several days before returning to the United States. His illness has forced him to withdraw from concerts in Prague and Pittsburgh next week. He is hoping to return to conducting later this month here in Detroit.
