Detroit (WXYZ) - Detroit overtook Baltimore as the nation's murder capital after new numbers came out.
New numbers obtained by the Associated Press and a Baltimore newspaper show Detroit under reported the actual number of murders in 2008.
Instead of 306, there were 338 murders. And Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says the number is as high as 423.
Even with the lower number of 338, it pushes Detroit ahead of Baltimore as America's murder capital.
The difference pushed Detroit's homicide rate to 37.4 per 100,000 residents, surpassing Baltimore's rate of 36.9 per 100,000, ranking it first among cities of more than 500,000. New Orleans, long said to be the most dangerous city has far fewer residents than a half million so that city was not considered.
A spokesperson with the Detroit Police Dept. told the Detroit News the numbers were correctly reported to the state, which then sends the material to the FBI.
