UPDATE: WXYZ.com has obtained the letter written by a veteran Detroit police officer and former member of the mayor's security team saying he knows about multiple parties at the Manoogian Mansion -- and now fears for his life.
WATCH LATEST UPDATE IN VIDEO PLAYER Officer Tony Davis, a 23-year veteran of the police department, sent the letter to Chief Ella Bully-Cummings and the Detroit Police Officers Association on Monday. WXYZ.com obtained a copy late Wednesday.
The letter....March 10, 2008
Dear Police Chief Ella M. Bully-Cummings:
As you know, I have been a Detroit Police Officer for twenty-three (23) years. From approximately 2000-2003, I was assigned to the Executive Protection Unit (EPU). My primary job assignment during these years was to protect the Mayor, his wife and children.
In 2003, after the newspapers presented a story about a party at the Mayor's mansion that got out of hand and after fellow EPU Detroit Police Officer Harold Nelthrope reported this incident and other improper and illegal activities to the Professional Accountability Bureau section of the Detroit Police Department, I was abruptly reassigned to the Gaming Division of the Detroit Police Department.
During my EPU assignment, I was subjected to intimidation and abuse by my supervisors. After the party at the Mayor's mansion, I was ordered by my supervisors to keep my mouth shut and to say that there never was any party.
Since my reassignment to Gaming, the abuse has gotten worse. Three (3) weeks ago, I ran into one of my former supervisors Greg Jones. He confronted me with hostility and said to me "there was no party at the Mayor's mansion." I replied to him, there was not only a party but there were several parties at the Mayor's mansion.
City Employees at Russell Ferry garage along with Detroit Police officers Harold Nelthrope, Walt Harris, myself and other officers assigned to EPU know that improper and possible illegal activities did in fact take place at the Mayor's mansion and elsewhere.
However, I am a professional. I have served the Detroit Police Department and the citizens of the City of Detroit professionally and competently and I have no desire to do anything to hurt the Mayor, the Police Department nor the city, which I love. But I fear for my own safety and for my life. If this abuse and retaliation does not stop immediately, I will have no alternative other than to take legal action.
Sincerely,
Police Officer Tony Davis
Gaming Operations
Detroit Police Department
