CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - He stands at the head of the class. Richard Nummer does not need textbooks to teach students at International Academy of Macomb about World War II and the battle of Iwo Jima. Instead, he can speak from his experiences there.
The former marine was invited to speak at the school by Alyssa Ryzyk.
"I think with him coming here we can learn about the importance of our history and World War II and what people gave up for us," said Alyssa.
Ryzyk first got acquainted with Nummer several months ago after Alyssa wrote a report on a marine who served in World War II. Forty years later he returned the belongings of Japanese soldiers who died in battle to their family members so they could have closure.
"I was amazed by this and I wrote a letter to the man, because I found out he lived in Eastpointe the same city I live," Alyssa said.
Nummer was happy to visit with Alyssa and months later, her classmates.
"Sometimes it brings tears to my eyes, things that bring back memories, but I'm glad to do it so at least people will know stuff,'' said Nummer.
