(WXYZ) - The IRS showed up at Carlson High School today, however, this was a welcomed visit!
The organization was there to recruit future employees. They conducted a teaching session for students from six high schools on what it's like to work in forensic accounting.
Students were made honorary agents for the day and given the task of investigating a real life financial crime. Chelsea Cunningham, a senior from Monroe said she loves shows like "Criminal Minds" and "Law and Order" so the day was great.
The kids two and a half hour investigation began with an anonymous informant and a bag of garbage. Students then worked with current and former IRS agents to learn the tools of trade, follow the paper trail and expose the fraud.
Stephen Moore, who is the PIO for the IRS criminal investigation, came up with this project seven years ago to target college students interested in accounting, business and criminal justice careers.
Since the program began, the IRS has employeed a few of the individuals who learned in the project. Maurice Aoute is the special agent in charge of the IRS criminal investigation unit in Michigan and he says the "Adrian Project" which was debuted at Adrian College, is now in every CI field office in the country.
