DETROIT (WXYZ) - There are reports that talks are accelerating between the UAW and General Motors.
A GM spokesperson says negotiations will not take place tonight, but that there have been ongoing discussions between the UAW and General Motors as part of their normal protocol.
There has been no official start of discussions between the UAW and GM. They talk on a routine basis.
UAW President Ron Gettelfinger says the union will seek rank and file approval for any changes it makes in its labor agreements.
You may remember, the U.S. Senate had refused to approve a bailout without steep labor cost reductions, and President Bush is requiring them in his rescue package.
Gettelfinger complains that the UAW is being singled out for more concessions than other stakeholders including dealers, suppliers and bond holders.
He says the union is willing to help, but everyone needs to get on the same page.
