Anti-freeze is highly toxic and would get into the drain system which eventually leads to Lake St. Clair or the Detroit River. It is also supposedly tastes "good" and many animals would drink it and possibly die. Not good. There is a mixture of beet-juice that has been used by a few cities and on the runways at the airport. It's expensive though and with the budget crunches I don't see it being used for a while yet. But with the below 0 temps without the wind chill salt won't be that effective so it's going to be fun driving for the next few days!

Why don't they just spray anti-freeze on the roads?

Sparrow - 1/13/2009 7:55 PM
Salt can be washed off before damage occurs, sand will damage when it's kicked up onto the finish. But you can think your answer is the only answer if it makes you feel better.

JonDoe - 1/13/2009 7:06 PM
"...(sand) ruins the paint finish with scratches." ---------The question was.."Why don't they use more sand in these cold temp.???" The ONLY answer is because the run-off clogs the drains and impedes proper street drainage. Period. If the effect on the condition of your vehicle was the issue, then why is highly corrosive salt used?

Sparrow - 1/13/2009 6:25 PM
Don't forget JonDoe, ruins the paint finish with scratches. Sand is not the answer.

JonDoe - 1/13/2009 6:11 PM
"Why don't they use more sand in these cold temp.???"---------------Sand clogs the road drainage and sewer systems. Then, when the snow melts, the streets flood.
