Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff Christine Beatty were arraigned this morning before Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Leonard Townsend at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice.

Townsend, who is known to be tough on defendants, went the other direction when it came to the mayor.

"He is not a flight risk," said Townsend. "I see no reason for the restrictions."

Townsend said Kilpatrick should be allowed to go to the Democratic National Convention and its "silly" to keep him from traveling there.

Kilpatrick and Beatty plead not guilty to charges of perjury and other illegal acts. They waived their right to a preliminary examination in Detroit's 36th District Court.

Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Lisa Lindsey told the judge she "strenuously disagreed" and plans to file a motion opposing the ruling.
