Three months ago, the Gannett-owned Birmingham Eccentric was informed it would be shut down after 131 years. But readers didn't get angry, they got motivated, and created a campaign called "Save The Eccentric."
And so far, the effort has been a success, securing 1,000 new subscriptions since May 1, keeping their doors open and rallying local businesses. Among those behind the effort is famed photographer Linda Solomon, who got her start at the paper, and not only will she be writing a weekly column, she is lining up nationally-known personalities--all from Birmingham--to write celebrity guest columns of their own.
The paper still needs about 4,000 new subscriptions to keep the effort alive, and if you'd like to help out, click here.
