Alton, I was raised in Detroit Martin/Devereaux (Near Chadsey H.S.) My house got turned into a dope house after we moved out and was burned down. Only a lot remains. I was lucky only got mugged once when I was 19 at school. Survived and moved on. So don't tell me I am not real. By the way you should spot sarcasm in the previous post if you are aware....Are you.

barbaraj116 ::: I am in no way putting down a free lunch. There were 9 kids in my family and things were tough from time to time. I am only bringing light that there were no people who really made a living off the system. I also had a few friends who needed the free lunch. A little help is nothing, when it's your life " Get a job "

Alton - the attitudes in the City County Building is not just geared toward whites. There attitudes are like that with anyone and almost everyone. I agree with many of you who said that Detroit needs to begin electing political officials responsibly. Stop voting by name recognition and race and begin voting by qualification and who will be best for the City. Detroit has a lot of potential and there are still a lot of good neighborhoods, but it is up to the people to begin doing something about it. Start attending City Council, School Board and neighborhood meetings. Let these politicians and potential politicians you are serious about "if they don't do their jobs" they are out of a job. It is time for the good people of Detroit to take back the City.

Nothing is ever going to change until the people of Detroit realize that they are the problem and do something about it. Until they stop electing corrupt political officials, take responsibility and clean up their city, and stop blaming everyone else for their situation, only til that happens will Detroit start to make progress. Til then the ghetto mentality will rule and so will the violence.

I told you so - 7/2/2009 10:46 PM
Where are the talking heads Jesse Jackson and big AL? I guess the dead guy in LA is more important. Sorry Detroit you will have to over come by yourself.

Cynical OB- Get real, all the racist are in Detroit! If the population is 90% black, well those are the facts my friend. I was born and raised in Detroit without the aid of welfare and my father was out of work for over a year. I went to a school which was 90% black and got my a@@ beat for being the only white boy in the class. Don't talk to me about being a racist! Attitudes in the City County Building is all racist and not in a good way so get lost!

barbaraj116---this kids got their needs met. They want sex and drugs and free everything which means the government confiscates money from the taxpayer and gives it to them because no necessities of life I can think of besides air is free.Today if you qualify for the free lunch program you qualify for a free cell phone with 68 minutes free calling time every month.I pay for mine and theirs.I work everyday of my life,no exaggeration.I get no empathy or understanding
