STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) - A man suspected in a string of home invasions has something very much in common with the people he's accused of robbing. Like himself, police say the suspect would only target people of Asian descent.
Vinh Phung is locked up after police say he was under surveillance when he broke into a home on Glengary Court in Sterling Heights, went through a back doorwall, and walked out carrying a duffle bag filled with cash, jewelry and small electronic equipment. Police had been watching the 34-year-old Southfield man who they believe has been targeting homes of Asian business people. Investigators say they found the Glengary address on a piece of paper in Phung's van when he was arrested.
Officers say they believe Phung will be linked to at least five home invasions in Sterling Heights and Troy, including one where a terrified young boy hid in the bathroom during the break-in and robbery. A suspect knocked on the front door in that case, and the young boy didn't answer because he was alone. The suspect made his move, through a back doorwall, while the boy stayed out of sight.
Police say they are not sure how the victims have been selected or why. They hope to find that out from the suspect.
