(WXYZ) - The holidays are quickly approaching, and unfortunately one out of every eight people in Michigan will need emergency help getting food this year.
WXYZ-TV is joining the effort to help feed the hungry.
Every day, Gleaners food bank distributes 75,000 pounds of food to the area's needy, much of it through soup kitchens and boxes of food called pantry paks.
This year the need is greater than every before. More than 51,000 families from our area have fallen into poverty in the last six years.
"Whether its the economy or people being on unemployment too long and losing their benefits, more people than ever are asking for first time help," said Gerry Brisson from Gleaners.
That's why WXYZ-TV is joining the effort to help collect food for our neighbors in need.
"For 32 years we have helped the needy," said Bob Sliva, WXYZ-TV Vice President and General Manager. "It only makes sense that we are helping our neighbors now."
"We found out during out Million Dollar Charity Challenge how serious the problem is," said Gary Van Elslander of Art Van. "And that's why we are helping in every way we can."
Special barrels are located in all 17 Art Van locations. Just bring in canned goods between now and December 13th. The food will be distributed through St. Vincent de Paul and Gleaners.
Remember, "Together We Can!"
