EAST LANSING, Mich. (WXYZ) - The rock that sits next to the Red Cedar River on the campus of Michigan State University has a new inspirational message from students to fellow students, "Congratulations seniors. Be a hero to someone."
Last week the rock became a rallying point to remember "Princess Lacey". Is the change of the message too soon?
Thousands of students signed the rock in memory of Lacey Holsworth who died of cancer. She became an inspiration for Michigan State and the basketball team that won the Big Ten Championship and went into the NCAA Tournament.
Lacey bonded with Adreian Payne, an MSU star athlete. Both he and MSU Coach Tom Izzo showed up at the rock for last week's impromptu memorial. The rock has no specific rules. It can be painted over every day as long as the message is not inappropriate.
If a students wants to pain the rock, they stake their claim by sitting next to the rock during the day and then paint their message after sundown.
Some students believe the new message is too soon. Graduation is not until next week.
