More than 100 cats discovered in Detroit home

(WXYZ) - A bad smell on Detroit's east side led to the discovery of more than 100 cats inside one home.

About 35 flea-ridden, malnourished kittens matted in their own feces were the only survivors after animal rescue groups found more than a 100 cats, most of them dead, inside a home on Detroit’s east side.

“These are pretty bad. They’re probably some of the worst cats I've seen in a while,” said Melanie Wittner of Hopeful Heart Rescue.

Dr. Cindy Baumhart said “many of them are significantly anemic, probably from blood loss from fleas.”

Animal advocates are now setting live traps around the home near Casino and Marne. We spoke to the neighbor who initially called police when the smell of decay became unbearable.

Those cleaning up say the woman handling the cats was a well-known animal rescue advocate who simply needed help.

The rescue group Hopeful Heart is making sure the 35 live cats are getting the help they need. If you’d like to help out, go HERE or HERE.
