(WXYZ) - A 46-year-old mother and 12-year-old daughter were found dead in their Clinton Township apartment on Tuesday afternoon.
Clinton Township Police say the pair were killed with what investigators are calling a cutting instrument. There was no sign of forced entry at their unit at Parkway Village Apartments.
The two victims had apparently not been seen this past weekend, according to police.
Not only was Pamela Minnifield a neighbor down the hall, she was a close friend of the victims found dead.
Minnifield says mother and daughter were inseparable.
"They were always together." said Minnifield, "That was her best friend and daughter. Always together."
Police say the two victims were mentally challenged, missing for the last several days.
"They have a caregiver, a guardian who called the apartment manager to come over and check on them." said Captain Richard Meirle, Clinton Township Police.
And that's when the apartment manager discovered the mother's body on the living room floor. Police found her 12-year-old daughter in a bedroom.
"My understanding, they're both mentally challenged, but there were absolutely no problems." said Meirle, "They used to go to the 7-11 every day to get a Slurpee. That's the biggest thing they did every day."
"They walked to 7-11," said Meirle, "[They] loved Big Gulps."
Neighbors say the victims would have never let a stranger in, and police say there were no signs of forced entry. It's why residents are concerned, as they try to make sense of a tragedy hitting so close to home.
"I'm moving, I can't stay there." said Minnifield, "I'm not going to stay here any longer. I'm afraid. I don't know what happened to her. It could be me next, who knows?"
7 Action News has learned the names of the victims, but Clinton Township police say it has not notified all next of kin. Investigators say they will officially release the names Wednesday.
