Mother, toddler seriously injured in parking lot accident

(WXYZ) - A 16-year-old driver hit a mother and her 2-year-old with such force as they were coming out of Taco Bell, that the back glass of his mini-van shattered.

When Ashley Bowen showed up to eat dinner at a nearby restaurant, Shelby Township Police were still reconstructing the accident. It happened at the Taco Bell near 23 Mile and Schoenherr just before 6:30 p.m.

Police worked for hours, taking measurements, to figure out how the Macomb Township teen backed over the 36-year-old woman and her toddler.

"My heart goes out to both families.  Both sides because I don’t know how his family is doing, the driver and I don’t know how the mother and her daughter are or anything like that," said Bowen.

Witnesses tell us the teenager peeled out of his parking spot and hit the mom and child.  The two were taken to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital.  The toddler was later transported to Children’s Hospital in Detroit.
