Music company suing Sixto Rodriguez, Detroit musician who was featured in 'Searching for Sugarman'

DETROIT (AP) - Sixto Rodriguez, the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary "Searching for Sugar Man," is being pulled into a lawsuit over songs on an album from 1970.

The dispute centers on the ownership of songs from "Cold Fact" and contracts between Rodriguez and two music companies.

Gomba Music is suing Interior Music in Detroit federal court, claiming it owns the copyright to the songs penned by Rodriguez. The lawsuit says the musician concealed his role as writer to sidestep any agreement he had with Gomba.

Interior released the "Cold Fact" album. In response to the lawsuit, it's blaming Rodriguez for any legal problems and named him Wednesday as a third-party defendant in the case.

A message was left Thursday with Rodriguez's lawyer.

The new development was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
