Giffords to attend Loughner sentencing Thursday

(WXYZ) - The man who pleaded guilty to the mass shooting that wounded former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will be sentenced Thursday.

Jared Loughner is expected to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in the January 2011 attack. The shooting killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Giffords.

As part of a plea deal, Loughner will avoid facing the death penalty in exchange for the life sentence.

Thursday's sentencing will be the first time victims of the shooting will confront Loughner.

ABC News is reporting that Giffords and husband Mark Kelly will be in the Arizona courtroom today. It's expected that Kelly will make a statement on behalf of the couple.

The former Congresswoman stepped down from the U.S. House in January 2012 to focus on her recovery.
