President Barack Obama said he won't sign another temporary government funding bill after the current one expires on Dec. 11.

He's demanding instead a budget agreement with Republicans controlling Congress that would lift a freeze on the budgets of both the Pentagon and domestic agencies.

Obama told a White House news conference that he "won't sign another shortsighted spending bill" and that the U.S. can't cut its way to prosperity.

At the same news conference, Obama also said he reluctantly accepted the resignation of Education Secretary Arnie Duncan.

The president credited Duncan with overseeing several improvements in the nation's schools. Obama has asked John King Jr., a senior Education Department official, to oversee the department in an acting capacity.
