New 'Giving Tuesday' tradition urges charitable contributions, volunteerism

DETROIT(WXYZ) - Today marks "Giving Tuesday" and charities nationwide are hoping that the new movement catches on.

The idea was birthed at the 92nd Street Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew Association in New York City and the United Nations Foundation helped cultivate the plan.

The idea behind the movement is to push people nationwide to engage in acts of giving after the big holiday shopping weekend. Those acts of giving could be anything from donating to a local organization or volunteering.

Over 2,000 partners have signed up as partners in the #GivingTuesday movement, including Beaumont Hospital, The United Way of Southeastern Michigan and Detroit Dog Rescue here at home.

The effort is gaining steam with retweets from big-name philanthropists like Bill Gates.
