(WXYZ) - Creators of a new app called Pare Up are hoping to help the world become a little less wasteful when it comes to food.
According to the app's website, each year about $165 billion worth of food goes unused.
The Pare Up app will allow food retailers to list their excess food items for a discount.
These items would be nearing their sell-by or expiration date. So instead of tossing them away, the hope would be that someone would come pick them up for a good price.
The cofounder of the app tells 7 Action News that users can view listings near them and easily go to the store to redeem their discount through the app.
The Pare Up app will launch in New York City, and hopefully expand to other major cities.
The food businesses will be listing goods that are hard to transport for safety reasons or don’t qualify for donation pick-ups.
