New Detroit Police Chief James Craig declares "change is coming."

(WXYZ) - New Detroit Police Chief James Craig declares "change is coming."

He also knows he's coming into his old hometown facing high unemployment, high crime, low police morale, and police response time.

Chief Craig has spent the last two days in Detroit and today talked one on one with 7 Action News Reporter Jim Kiertzner, "I've heard the complaints about 30, 40 minute response times. Hours, sometimes hours?  Sometimes no show.  That can't happen."

Chief Craig says he will put as many cops with a gun and a badge on the street even if it means push back from what could be considered a top heavy Detroit Police Department.

"The drty word for me is, 'Chief it's always been that way' Really?"

The new Chief also wants to improve community and media relations.

In Detroit at least 12 shootings happened while Chief Craig was in town. And a Detroit Police news conference ended abruptly when current top police officials refused to talk about the latest wave of shootings.
