New exercise class helps dogs and their owners get a workout

(WXYZ) - When you're looking to shed off some extra pounds, sometimes you have to work like a dog.
Or maybe just with your dog?
A new exercise class is promoting fitness for both you and your pooch.
"You're getting a dog trained, you're burning calories, you're working out together… I thought it was a great idea," said Sheila Berrios, a personal trainer.
It's called Bark ‘N' Burn, and at Wag ‘N' Tails in Shelby Township, dogs work their little muscles alongside their owners-- using equipment specifically designed for them.
Organizers say that there are many benefits to working out with your dog, including helping your dog to become more social and getting a good workout without feeling like it's too much to handle.
"As they're doing some of these exercises, they don't even realize that they're working out, because they were so focused on their dog" said Christine Fox, owner of Wag ‘N' Tails in Shelby Township.
Similar dog workout classes have popped up across the nation, but Wag ‘N' Tails says they are one of the first places in Michigan to pick up on the trend.
"It's not super intense, but it is beneficial, you'll get some cardio, some stretching, some workout in," said Sheila.
Christine says she's confident that the popularity of these dog workouts will continue to grow.
At the end of these hour long sessions, it's easy to see that the pups and their owners are pooped.
"She heads for the couch and she sleeps, you can tell she's tired," joked Sue Garian, one of the Bark ‘N' Burn participants, while holding her dog.
I guess you could call it a "ruff" workout for both parties.
