New guidelines on how much weight to gain during pregnancy

(WXYZ) - The National Institutes of Health have released new guidelines on how much weight women should gain when they're pregnant.

The guidelines are based on Body Mass Index (BMI).

According to the guidelines, a woman with a healthy BMI, which is usually 25 to 29, should gain between 25 and 35 pounds when pregnant.

Women with a BMI higher than 29 should not gain more than 11 to 20 pounds during pregnancy.

Doctors say gaining too much weight during pregnancy can lead to health complications such as gestational diabetes.

It can also increase a woman's risk of premature birth, doctors say.
