SURVEY: What does dad really want for Father's Day?

(WXYZ) - A new survey from the site RetailMeNot.com finds most dads want a simple gift this year.

The site surveyed more than 1,000 adults in the U.S. and found 17 percent of dads want a gift card and about the same percentage of dads would be happy just to spend time with the family.

If you'd like to get something other than a gift card, the survey found most dads would like a gift that falls in the technology or electronics category.

Three percent of dads are interested in receiving home improvement products, three percent want video game systems and about one percent are hoping for sports lessons, according to the survey.

The survey also found dads tend be shortchanged compared to moms.

According to survey results, 86 percent of kids planned to buy something for mom for Mother's Day but only 77 percent planned to buy something for dads for Father's Day.

The survey also found sons tend to be more generous than daughters.

"For Father's Day, the guys are shelling out the big bucks," said Katie Linendoll, a tech expert with RetailMeNot.com. "They're spending an average around $71, where us ladies are spending around $53. On Mother's Day they're even spending $30 more than females," Linendoll said.

Some people may forget about dads' special day completely. Eleven percent of people admitted to forgetting to wish their dad a "Happy Father's Day" in the past, according to the survey.
