This year marks nine decades of the event the company that owns 7 Action News has sponsored, the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The event is one week away.

An eighth grader from Novi is working hard, studying words and preparing to take on the competition.

Varad Mulay is an accomplished speller. We met in the auditorium where he won the Novi Middle School Spelling Bee before winning a regional spelling bee. He now is preparing to compete in the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 28 in Maryland.

“I am pretty excited to meet the other spellers who have done the same things I have,” Mulay said.

He has worked hard to get to this point. When he was younger, his mom signed up for North South Foundation educational materials.

“They send out lists of 1,000 words each year, so I have been doing that since 2nd grade,” Mulay said.

He studied those words and turned them into opportunity.

“The work was kind of boring, but it was fun to see it pay off in the end,” Mulay said.

He is doing his best to cram and learn all words that break the rules of their language of origin before the “big bee.”

“All I can do is study now,” Mulay said.
