NYC mayor to order gas rationing

NEW YORK CITY (WXYZ) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is imposing gas rationing starting on Friday.

Bloomberg says license plates ending in odd numbers will only be allowed to buy gas on odd-numbered days and plates ending in even numbers on even days.

The mayor says the best way to help customers buy gas faster is to alternate the days that drivers can purchase gas.

"This is not a step we take lightly, but given the shortages we will face over the next two weeks, we believe it is the right step," tweeted Bloomberg. "Emergency vehicles; buses; para-transit vehicles; commercial vehicles; taxis and licensed liveries are exempt from alternate-day gas order."

The gas order takes effect Friday at 6 a.m.
