Off-duty officer involved in shooting in Detroit

(WXYZ) - Detroit Police say an off-duty officer was involved in a shooting on the city's west side Tuesday afternoon after he heard a car accident outside of his home and rushed to help.

In one of the vehicles involved in the crash was 76-year-old James Atkins, Sr.

"As far as I know he's able to speak.  But they did take to the hospital and he was going in the emergency room for testing," said Jason Atkins of his father, James.

Jason says his father, who is also battling cancer, had just left the house and came to a stop at the end of the street when a Cadillac crashed into his father's driver's side door.

The off-duty officer who came outside shortly after the crash noticed the Cadillac driver starting to flee the scene and pursued him.

Police say the man who ran reacted by shooting at the off-duty officer.  The officer returned fire and hit him.  It's likely the suspect didn't know he was shooting at a cop since the officer was not on duty he did not have on a uniform.

The suspect was arrested and taken to a local hospital, according to police.  At last check Tuesday night both the suspect and Atkins were still being treated in the emergency room.

A third person, a 12-year-old child was also injured during the accident.  Police say the driver of the cadillac clipped the boy and the boy suffered an ankle injury.
