With the Michigan Primary now behind us, the stage is set for the November General Election.  It could be the most important presidential race ever.  Some very important local races and issues will also be on the ballot.  As a country and community we have less than 100 days to increase voter education and participation!  Through our Democracy 2016 campaign reports and interviews, we will do as much as we can to help.  It’s easy to find on our wxyz.com web site.

A lot of attention will be focused on the race for the White House and who will get to nominate future Supreme Court justices.  Also on the line, which political party will control the legislative chambers in Washington and Lansing?  Will it be another clean sweep for the Republican Party?

Here in Southeast Michigan, Macomb County’s 10th District will be sending a new representative to Congress.  Candice Miller is not seeking re-election to that seat.  And, finally, voters in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties will have a chance to vote a $4.6 billion regional transportation millage plan up or down.

Michigan voters will be facing long ballots this fall.  Now is the time to become familiar with candidate platforms and ballot proposals.  Encourage your relatives, friends and co-workers to do the same.  Four years ago, 63-percent of our state’s registered voters made it to the polls.  That’s better than only 52-percent in the 1948 presidential election year but a far cry from nearly 73-percent in 1960.

This year, let’s work together to better educate each other and break Michigan’s voter turnout record.  The future is in our hands!
