The hard fought campaigns are now over.  The voters have spoken loud and clear through our longstanding system of free elections. That is how American democracy works.  We, the people, armed with our ballots, have the last word.  It’s time now time to begin healing the wounds and move forward peacefully as one nation, one state, and one regional community.

President-elect Donald Trump, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama have set the right tone.

President-elect Donald Trump: “To all Republicans and Democrats across this nation, it is time to come together as one nation.”

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton:  “Donald Trump is going to be our President.  We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead.”

President Barack Obama: "We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country.  The peaceful transition of power is one of the hallmarks of this country.”

Michiganders and Detroit area residents also made their choices on a wide range of local candidates and issues.  The Michigan House will remain under Republican control along with the State Supreme Court.  And the GOP has maintained its 9 to 5 lead among the Michigan Congressional delegation.  Congresswoman Candice Miller comes back home to take over the Macomb Water Works Department.

By a very close margin, Detroit rapid transit advocates were told to go back to the drawing board.  Look for the issue again.  And finally, Detroit has a new school board with power and major responsibility that will be closely watched.

The people have spoken and we urge our newly elected officials to lead with integrity, courage and fairness.
