Is it a beacon of hope, or is it light pollution? That’s the issue being raised regarding the blue lights shining from the roof of Ford Field in Detroit.

Now, there's a petition to dim the lights.

In a Facebook post, one supporter, Katie Hearns, says she lives four miles from Ford Field and says she can see the lights from her house and it's unsettling.

She says as a driver passing by – she feels the lights are distracting, bad for the environment and against the law.

And she is not alone. More than 1,000 people have signed a petition on change.org, started by Margo Dalal, asking the city to comply with its illumination ordinance. She says light pollution can impact the environment and wildlife even human health.

She says the roof top lights set the wrong precedent for the other stadiums being built.

"The petition is expected to be sent to the planning department, the building inspector, and the mayor.

Officials with Ford Field released the following statement:

Ford Field has received much positive feedback about the light emanating from our stadium and its contribution to the nightscape of downtown Detroit. Local law enforcement has confirmed a measured improvement in public safety in the immediately surrounding area since we began operating the exterior lighting. Ford Field is committed to positively impacting the community, and is evaluating the exterior lighting with city officials to ensure it’s compliant with the ordinance and not unreasonably obtrusive to nearby neighborhoods.
