Photo of porn suspect generates online reaction

(WXYZ) - Investigators are working to make sure a man charged with distributing child pornography did not victimize local youngsters

That’s why Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard authorized the release of a second police photo of Bruce Fonda following his arrest last week and arraignment.

That photo, showing a full, frontal of the 63-year old Rochester Hills resident has generated a lot of reaction on WXYZ.com and the station’s Facebook page.

“I thought that it was appropriate to have that picture because of the attire, the appearance was pretty unique,” said Bouchard

“When you just have the mug shot, it may not all come together,” he said. “They may not remember anything but when they see the totality of the appearance they may say, ‘I remember him.’ If there’s something that they remember him in a criminal potential sense, then maybe we’ll cue a call and we can investigate it.”

Fonda was charged with six counts for the distribution of Child Sexually Abusive Material and the use of a computer to commit a crime.

The Sheriff credits the department’s Computer Crimes Unit for working with police in Boise, Idaho to track and identify Fonda.

The strong online response to the photos on WXYZ’s social media platforms does not surprise Bouchard.

“Most people view a pedophile, a child predator as one of the lowest forms of criminal activity possible, the victimization of something so sweet and innocent as a child is repugnant on every level and I think it draws, rightfully so, a visceral reaction,” Bouchard said.

Fonda has no prior record.

If convicted, he could face up to seven years in jail and fines that total as much $100,000.
