ROSEVILLE, Mich., (WXYZ) - A 77 year-old woman is fighting for her life after police say she was brutally beaten by her own son.
Around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Roseville police received several 911 calls from the Super 8 Motel on Little Mack Avenue.
When they got there, they found a 77-year-old woman lying unconscious in the parking lot. She'd been beaten in the head and face.
According to investigators, her 35 year-old son Thomas Gusal, had called his mother for a ride from the motel. When she got there, he demanded her car. When she refused to let him take it, police say he became irate and beat her.
"It's unthinkable for anybody, but simply because you want a ride and don't get it and you would resort to that? It's just awful," says Roseville Police Chief James Berlin.
After the beating, police say Gusal went "crazy" and jumped on cars in the parking lot and kicked in windshields.
Witnesses pointed out Gusal to police and he was arrested.
Police believe he may have been on drugs or was looking to get a "fix", but it's too early to say for sure.
Investigators say Gusal's 77-year-old mother may have suffered a brain hemorrhage. They say it's too early to tell if she'll survive.
Gusal has been charged with assault to do great bodily harm less than murder.
In court, he claimed he was worried about his mom. "I'm concerned about my mom more than anything else," said Gusal.
He also claimed that he was drunk last night and didn't remember what happened.
The judge set bond at $150,000.
