DETROIT (WXYZ) - Novi Police officers and agents with the United States Secret Service arrested two men suspected of stealing at least $33,000 worth of car parts from local dealerships by paying for large orders with bad checks and fraudulent credit cards.
And when the suspects placed another order for car parts with Marty Feldman Chevrolet in Novi, undercover officers and agents setup a sting operation on Detroit's west side where the men wanted the parts dropped off Thursday morning.
Once the transaction was made and police identified themselves, they were able to take one of the men, a 40-year-old, into custody. But his 37-year-old accomplice tried to drive away in a Red Ford Expedition.
Novi Police Chief David Molloy said the fraud suspect who was speeding away tried to run over one of his officers. That officer opened fire, striking the man who continued to drive about two miles north where he crashed.
The suspect, who had been shot, exited his crashed SUV and was arrested after a short foot chase.
The wounded suspect was transported to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Both men face state and federal charges.
Molloy believes the men have defrauded, at least, six to seven Metro-Detroit car dealerships by paying for the large orders of car parts with the fraudulent credit cards and bad checks.
The officer involved shooting is being investigated by the Detroit Police Department.
