Police search for missing kayaker, father in Shelby Township

(WXYZ) - Shelby Township Police are searching for a missing kayaker on the Clinton River.

Police say the 47-year-old father of three parked his vehicle at the River Bends Park Boat Launch on Thursday, possibly with the intention to kayak to Heritage Park in Utica.

7 Action News has learned that he is an avid athlete and was supposed to compete in a kayak race on Saturday.

Officials have searched the waters and were able to recover his paddle on the river near 33 Mile Road, but there has been no sign of his blue and white kayak.

Oliver Woodrow Dixon III is described as 6'-0", 190 pounds wearing a red life jacket and black shorts. He has grey hair and a goatee.

He posted a picture on Facebook of his kayak on top of his car on Thursday before he disappeared with the words "cross training."

The Michigan Homeland Security helicopter was searching the length of the river on Sunday, but the dense tree cover on the river front makes visibility difficult.

Police say that they can't rule out foul play until the kayak has been recovered.

"He was an experienced kayaker, he was a paratrooper, drop him in the woods and he would get out at night," said Oliver Dixon, Oliver's father.

Anyone who has any information regarding Dixon's whereabouts is asked to call Shelby Township Police immediately at 586-731-2121.
