EXCLUSIVE POLL: Duggan still leads Napoleon 2-to-1 among Detroit voters

(WXYZ) - With the Detroit mayoral election just one week away, retired Detroit Medical Center CEO Mike Duggan has slightly increased his 2-to-1 lead over Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon.

In a brand new exclusive WXYZ-TV 7/Detroit Free Press Poll of 400 likely Detroit voters, 51 percent say they would cast their ballot for Duggan, if the election were held today.  Twenty-six percent will vote for Napoleon and 23 percent are undecided.  In September, our exclusive survey had Duggan at 49 percent versus 25 percent for Napoleon.

Recently, Sheriff Napoleon announced that if he were elected Mayor, he would make former Detroit City Attorney Krystal Crittendon his Deputy Mayor. According to our survey respondents, that political move barely helps Napoleon as well as Duggan.  Once voters were told Crittendon would be part of the team, 52 percent said they would vote for Duggan, 27 percent would select Napoleon.

Bernie Porn, President of Epic MRA, the polling firm that conducted the poll, said "It will be a very difficult challenge for Napoleon to make up ground in a week. He hasn't made any progress since the last WXYZ-TV 7/Detroit Free Press survey."

Porn added, "Duggan is outspending Napoleon 10 to 1. He gets credit for being a lifelong Detroiter and better prepared to deal with crime. But overall, he's not what the majority of Detroit voters are looking for in a new mayor."

Our survey also showed that Duggan has a favorable rating of 66 percent. Only 17 percent gave him an unfavorable rating.

By comparison, Napoleon had a favorable rating of 46 percent and an unfavorable rating of 37 percent.

When asked what they liked most about former businessman Duggan, Detroiters said he would be "better able to manage the city's budget and finances" and "he would be more effective in working with Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr.

Sheriff Napoleon received his highest marks for having "strong roots in the community" and "fighting crime" as the former Detroit police chief.

This latest survey was conducted October 24 – 26 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percent. Twenty percent of the voters we talked to were reached on their cell phones.
